Der Autor über das Buch:

Ich arbeite an der Universität Potsdam, dort unterrichte ich u.a. einen Bioinformatik Kurs für Bachelor-Studenten in den Biowissenschaften. Einer der Kritikpunkte in den letzten beiden Jahren war, dass es für unseren Kurs keine geeignete Literatur (z.B. für die Klausurvorbereitung) gibt. Die Lösung des Problems: selbst ein Textbuch für diesen Kurs schreiben!
Ich freue mich sehr darüber, dass das Buch vor Semesterbeginn fertig geworden ist. Hoffentlich ist es für unsere eigenen Studenten genauso interessant wie für Studenten von anderen Unis!

Stefanie Hartmann and Joachim Selbig teach bioinformatics courses at the University of Potsdam. For their undergraduate course they wanted a textbook that introduced students to the field of bioinformatics, with a focus on the analysis of sequences and structures. Because they use the Linux operating system and the statistics software R for the computer exercises, they also wanted an introductory text on these topics. Since the authors couldn't find a book that contained the exact mix of things they are teaching in their course, they decided to write their own: it's the book you're holding in your hands. Meinen Glückwunsch zum Buch. Mal dumm gefragt: Ist auch eine Ausgabe in deutscher Sprache geplant oder bleibt es international auf Englisch?

Marlene: Wir haben uns entschieden, das Buch auf Englisch zu schreiben, denn auch die Primärliteratur und die ganzen Fachbegriffe kommen aus dem Englischen.
Wer heutzutage in den Biowissenschaften bleiben möchte, kommt um Englisch nicht herum. Auch unsere Vorlesungsfolien sind übrigens meist in Englisch, und im Masterstudiengang ist Englisch sogar z.T. Unterrichtssprache.
