The book also covers a small part of the beginnings of the largest brass band movement in Germany and the general development of Salvation Army brass band music in this country from its beginning towards the end of the 19th Century, the glory days of the 1920s and the difficult times after the First and Second World Wars with all the ensuing problems and hindrances for Salvation Army music there.
It was not until 1989 that it again became possible to reestablish a Staff Band as a brass band at the Territorial Headquarters in Germany.
Gernod Kumm, born 1950, initially completed training in the wholesale and export business. After a degree in Business Studies he spent 35 years in Human Resources, 25 years as the Personnel Director in one of the largest protestant social institutions in northern Germany. He has been a member of the Salvation Army since he was 13 and together with his wife and son is a member of the Salvation Army band in Hanover.
His great grandfather was the first in the family to join the Salvation Army. Every generation since after him has been a member of either the old or the new Staff Band.
Since the reestablishment of the Staff Band of the Salvation Army in Germany 1989 he has been a playing member. With his many years of playing, his additional duties and the rich trove of material available to him Gernod was able to include many experiences and adventures of the band in this book.
